The
Teaching of Science and Mathematics in English (ETeMS)
Modules
Phase 2 of the English for the Teaching
of Mathematics and Science (ETeMS) course
has been developed especially for those
mathematics and science teachers who have
completed Phase I of ETeMS. As in Phase
1, there will be 90 hours of face-to-face
interaction supported with self instructional
materials.
There are 3 modules in Phase 2 (Alpha, Beta
and Gamma). These modules are intended to
further develop the teachers' English language
competence, specifically in relation to
the practical aspects of the teaching of
mathematics and science.
Module Alpha focuses on Note Making and
Task Design, while developing Grammar and
Vocabulary concurrently.
The Beta module deals with the use of courseware
supplied by the Ministry of Education to
supplement the teaching of Mathematics and
Science. It also builds on the teachers'
experience and knowledge in writing test
items for mathematics and science.
Module Gamma emphasizes classroom presentation
skills with attention given to pronunciation.
Throughout Phase 2 teachers will also develop
a portfolio of materials that have practical
applications in their own teaching contexts.
It is hoped that through their participation
in Phase 2 of the ETeMS course the mathematics
and science teachers will have developed
the confidence to further extend their mastery
of English on their own. This will contribute
effectively towards the success of the Government's
policy to teach mathematics and science
in English at all levels.
